How to Choose a Software Development Partner in Sydney
9 questions to ask before you sign

The decision isn't about the cheapest quote or the flashiest portfolio. It's about nine questions - and most business owners don't know to ask them.
Why the first five quotes you get will all look different
Most agencies quote from different assumptions. The questions below force those assumptions into the open.
Question 1 - How do you scope before you quote?
Want to hear:
We run a paid discovery, usually one to two weeks, that produces a written specification before we quote the build.
Red flag:
We can give you a rough number today.
Question 2 - Who actually writes the code?
Want to hear:
Named individuals with specific roles.
Red flag:
Vague references to 'our team' or offshore structures you can't verify.
Question 3 - What happens when something goes wrong?
Want to hear:
A specific process for scope changes, weekly status updates, a named person owning delivery.
Red flag:
Don't worry, we sort things out as they come up.
Question 4 - Who owns the code, the data, and the keys?
Want to hear:
You own the code outright, the data sits in your cloud account, the keys are yours on day one.
Red flag:
Anything that means you can't take the system elsewhere.
Question 5 - How do you handle scope changes?
Want to hear:
A written change-request process with fixed pricing tiers.
Red flag:
We'll just figure it out and sort the billing later.

Question 6 - What does ongoing support look like after launch?
Want to hear:
A clearly priced ongoing support plan with defined response times.
Red flag:
We'll be around.
Question 7 - Can we talk to a previous client who had a problem?
Want to hear:
A real name and a real story, told with professional candour.
Red flag:
All our projects go smoothly.
Question 8 - What does your contract say about IP and handover?
Want to hear:
Clear, short, plain English. IP transfers on payment.
Red flag:
A 40-page contract and a sales rep who says 'that's just standard.'
Question 9 - What would you talk us out of, if you could?
Want to hear:
A specific, thoughtful answer that pushes back on your assumptions.
Red flag:
Nothing, it all sounds great.
Five red flags that should end the conversation
- They quote before scoping.
- They won't give you a reference for a hard project.
- They hedge on code ownership.
- They can't explain what happens when something breaks.
- They talk about your project in generic terms.
Pull Quote: The best software partners will ask you harder questions than you ask them. If the conversation feels easy, you haven't found a partner - you've found a vendor.
